José Manuel Durão Barroso

Presidente della Commissione Europea dal 2004, José Manuel Durão Barroso ha intrapreso la carriera politica nel 1980 nel Partito Social-democratico portoghese (PSD). Nel 1999 è stato nominato Capo del partito, venendo poi rieletto tre volte. Nello stesso periodo riveste il ruolo di Vice Presidente del Partito Popolare Europeo e nell’aprile 2002 viene eletto Primo Ministro del Portogallo, carica che manterrà fino a luglio 2004. Barroso detiene un Master in Scienze Politiche e Affari Europei della Università di Ginevra, ha ricoperto il ruolo di Direttore del Dipartimento per le Relazioni Internazionali della Università Lusíada in Portogallo (1995-1999) ed è stato Visiting Professor alla Georgetown University dal 1996 al 1998.

José Manuel Durão Barroso’s political career began in 1980 when he joined the Portuguese Social Democratic Party (PSD). He was named President of the party in 1999 and re-elected three times. During the same period, he served as Vice President of the European People's Party. In April 2002, he was elected Prime Minister of Portugal. He remained in office until July 2004 when he became President of the European Commission. He was re-elected for another five-year term by the European Parliament in September 2009.
Mr. Barroso holds a Master in Political Science and European Affairs from the University of Geneva, served as Head of International Relations Department of Lusíada University, Portugal, from1995-1999 and was Visting Professor at Georgetown University, USA,  from 1996-1998.
