From Knowledge to Partecipation: a Festival to make Europe

As a former President of the European Parliament, he knows very well how knowledge and participation go hand in hand within the European Union. Thus, Josep Borrell, President of the European University Institute, has presented the Festival d’Europa, taking place from the 6th to the 10th of May 2011 in Florence, as the event that will convert “Florence into one of the European Capitals, thanks to the presence of the most European leaders in Tuscany”. Moreover, according to Borrell “The Festival d’Europa will give us the opportunity to internationally promote Florence and, at the same time, revive the role of the Institute as the inventor and promoter of the event, at European and national level. Among the several objectives of the Festival d’Europa, the increase of citizens’ participation in the decision-making processes of the European institutions”.

From Florence, the proof that Europe is alive and withstands crisis

An opportunity to proof that Europe withstands well the crisis and is still alive. In short, this is the Festival d’Europa for Italian Minister for Foreign Affairs, Franco Frattini. Stressing the ancient roots of the glorious marriage between Florence and Europe, in his message sent for the Festival presentation Minister Frattini has highlighted the appropriateness to devote the international conference The State of the Union, core of the Festival d’Europa, to the “post-Lisbon period”. Indeed, according to Frattini “2011 is the year in which the Lisbon Treaty produces all its effects. Certainly through the European External Action Service, which, under the responsibility of the High Representative, became effective on the 1st of January; and then through the President of the European Council’s proposals of to introduce the new measures of economic and financial governance into the Treaty”. The Minister will be present at the Festival.
