Ryiji, a North-European Legend

The Galleria Asia Occidentale in Via Maggio 45r, in cooperation with the Associazione Via Maggio, features a collection of antique and vintage Ryiji, a selection which is partly new. The most archaic Ryiji, dating back to the fifteenth-century were sometimes blankets used by fishermen and sailors, at other times precious wedding blankets. The motifs and the colours embody the whole popular culture disclosing a lot of beliefs. Ryiji are therefore the core of the North-European textile art that in the twentieth century was recovered by many Finnish designers in order to create contemporary collections.
